Though public school test scores are improving across the
nation, many parents remain concerned by a moral vacuum
that exists in the country.
Cheerleaders gone wild, improper student/teacher relationships,
gang violence, drugs and promiscuity all haunt our nation’s
children.
That is a major reason why Christian schools are seeing
record growth. In response to that interest Metro Voice
will hosts the 10th Annual Christian Education Expo for
k-12 through the university level.
Turnout at the this trail-blazing, combined education event
continues to reflect interest in private education and the
need for an event to help answer the questions that parents
and students often have. The Expo will be held Saturday,
February 23 at Colonial Presbyterian Church. The church
is located at 9500 Wornall Road, just north of I-435 in
south Kansas City. Expo times are 9:00am to 2:30pm.
The expo, which is free to the public, typically draws
several thousand people who are looking at options for various
levels of education including K-12, homeschooling, plus
juniors and senior students who want to visit with college
admission representatives.
“This is a great opportunity for parents to visit with
quality schools and meet the teachers and administrators
of those schools,” said Anita Widaman, expo coordinator,
“It’s really a one-stop shopping experience”.
Widaman, who had a successful 16-year career in public
education, said she and her husband founded the expo out
of a personal need. “Just before our children were old enough
to begin school, we realized there was not one source for
parents to go to for answers to their questions,” she said.
“Here I was, an experienced middle-school guidance counselor,
and I didn’t know what was the best option for my children.”
Widaman said that if she had questions then she knew there
must be thousands of other parents with similar questions
with no where to turn.
The Expo was a response to that need. Starting in 1999,
the expo has brought parents and schools together under
one roof. “The atmosphere during the day is wonderful,”
says Widaman, “It’s about a lot more than just education,
it’s about community—lots of people with similar goals—they
all want what’s best for their kids.”
Widaman doesn’t knock public education but rather says
it may not be the best option for every family. “Parents
need to know that there are many choices for them—homeschooling,
private, a combination—some families are very creative in
finding the right fit for their kids, it’s all about choices”.
Widaman says the same holds true for Christian college
education, “Some of the best colleges in the country are
Christian”.
The expo immediately struck a nerve. Since its inception,
the expo has continued to grow and expand.
“This year we’ve moved the expo to Evangel Temple. The
church has tremendous visibility from the highway, is between
Missouri and Kansas and fits our goal to be a community-based
expo,” says Dwight Widaman, Anita’s husband.
“We’ve found that parents and students make the short drive
from anywhere in the metro to the expo.”
Widaman says that families are use to driving to go out
to dinner or to a soccer game, and driving from Independence
or Olathe to South KC is not a deterrent.
This year, once again, the very best in Kansas City area
private elementary and secondary schools from Kansas and
Missouri will have booths and multi-media displays. The
area’s largest and most established Christian schools will
be available for parents to see their curriculum, talk with
their administrators and teachers and generally get a first-hand
account of those school’s missions and priorities. But the
expo isn’t just for the large schools, many smaller to medium-sized
schools will be in attendance. In recent years, the expo
has seen an increase in the number of participating schools.
For parents of junior or senior high students, a wide variety
of private Christian colleges will be present with multi-media
displays, booths and admissions counselors who will be available
to answer questions and give out information on their colleges
including financial aid info.
Colleges enjoy the expo because it allows them to visit
with not only Seniors, but Juniors who are planning ahead
as well as homeschool families.
A wide variety of private Christian colleges will be present

who will be available to answer questions and give out information
including financial aid info.
“It’s an especially worthwhile drive for students looking
for a wide variety of college options,” Dwight Widaman continued,
“With the price of gas nowadays, why drive three or six
hours to visit one college when you can visit 40 colleges
within the span of three hours?” Colleges participate from
across the Midwest including Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska,
Iowa, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Illinois. Schools such as Liberty
University in Lynchburg, Virginia and other states also
attend. Schools have even come from Florida. This year many
denominations will be represented as well as independent
schools.
In addition, popular mini-seminars are held. These seminars
include a panel discussion of parents who have used homeschooling,
private education and a combination of the two options.
A second seminar is titled “Homeschooling 101—Where do I
Begin”. There is never a lack of questions for the parents
who sit on the seminar panel. A third popular seminar helps
high school students and parents navigate what can be confusing
processes finding and applying for college financial aid.
